CLIPP Fees

Medical students work through a CLIPP case.
What factors into the cost of CLIPP?

Our fees for CLIPP are comparable to the cost of a house officer's manual or review textbook. Like a textbook, CLIPP can remain a valuable teaching tool only if it is kept current. Reviewing, revising and updating the cases and teaching resources, revising and validating the final exam questions, ensuring the cases remain aligned with the COMEP curriculum, and creating multimedia require a significant effort. Unlike a textbook, the Program also must provide for the costs of running the servers, delivering the cases, providing timely user support and continuous access to the Internet, in addition to maintaining custom software and log data.

CLIPP Use

CLIPP is currently in use by the majority of U.S. pediatric clerkships. Approximately 75 percent of all medical students in the United States and Canada are now using CLIPP, with 12,000 students using CLIPP cases each year. In addition, a number of osteopathic, nurse practitioner and international medical schools are using CLIPP. Since the project's inception, nearly 400,000 CLIPP case sessions have been completed by more than 25,000 students.

What is the fee structure?

Institutional subscriptions

Medical education institutions' fees are based on total enrollment, first- through fourth-years inclusive. (Enrollment figures for U.S. schools are found at the AAMC Web site. Figures for Canadian schools are from the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Web site.) Institutional subscriptions are for one year, and will allow all medical students, residents and faculty at that institution unlimited access to CLIPP. The fees are based on the following ranges:

Fewer than 200 enrolled students: $2,000
200-299: $3,000
300-399: $4,000
400-499: $5,000
500-599: $6,000
600-699: $7,000
> 700: $8,000

For example, the fee for a school with a total enrollment of 388 is $4,000.

Institutional subscriptions include the CLIPP cases as well as access to the Instructors’ Area, including the CLIPP usage log data. Only COMSEP member clerkship directors will be provided access to the CLIPP final exam question bank. In addition to the pediatrics clerkship, institutions may choose to use CLIPP cases for pre-clinical Doctoring courses, for Family Medicine clerkships, for pediatric or family medicine interns, etc.

Individual users
The cost for individual students registering for CLIPP is $30 for a 90-day subscription. Note: Using this method of payment, clerkship directors and their faculty do not have access to students’ log data or to the final exam questions.

Are there discounts available?

Unfortunately we cannot offer discounts on our fees. It has always been our intention to provide equal access to CLIPP cases for all students and schools. When we have reached sustainable levels of funding, and with the assistance of the CLIPP Advisory Board, the program will consider whether discounts are advisable and feasible.

Can I pay less if I require only a few cases?

As with purchasing a textbook, a subscription to CLIPP provides access to the full content of the Web site and cases. Modifying the software and Web site to allow for variable user access would increase our costs considerably. In addition, the institutional subscription provides access to CLIPP for all medical school courses and residency programs, whose directors may choose to begin using CLIPP as well.

Can we expect the user fees to increase in the future?

In fact, the fees for the 2007-2008 academic year decreased for almost all schools, compared with fees for the 2006-2007 year. iInTIME directors have worked with business leaders to establish our current fees at a realistic level that will sustain CLIPP for the foreseeable future. In addition, we are actively working with a number of outside organizations and businesses to establish financial relationships that will help sustain iInTIME.
